Chlamydia

Caused by bacteria, chlamydia may cause painful infections in the genital area. The disease is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in men and women under 25. If you have had unprotected sex, you should get tested whether you have problems or not.

How is chlamydia transmitted?
Chlamydia is usually transmitted during unprotected sex, i.e. sex without a condom.

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?
Women:
Unusual discharge, burning when urinating and sometimes bleeding between menstruation. Pain in the lower abdomen can be a symptom of inflammation in the cervix.

Men:
Pain/itching when urinating, discharge from the urethra, sometimes painful scrotum.

Note that Chlamydia often has very few symptoms, sometimes none at all. Using a condom is an effective way of protecting against infection.

What is the testing procedure?
To find out whether a person is infected with chlamydia, a urine sample is usually taken. With women, a sample is also usually taken from the cervix and vagina with a cotton swab. After a few days, the person is told whether or not they are infected.

How is chlamydia treated?
Chlamydia is treated with antibiotics designed to attack the chlamydia bacteria. The doctor may require the patient to return for a follow-up check. Testing and treatment are free of charge.

What about my partner?
Your current and any previous partners who may be infected must be examined and treated if necessary. Avoid intercourse during the treatment period. An infected person must follow the doctor’s instructions in order to prevent other people from being infected.

What secondary diseases can chlamydia cause?
Untreated chlamydia is the most common cause of inflammation of the fallopian tubes. In the worst case, it may lead to difficulties in getting pregnant in the future. In other cases, the fallopian tubes may be damaged badly enough to increase the risk of an ectopic pregnancy. A pregnant woman with chlamydia may infect her child during birth. The child may then suffer eye or lung inflammation, with a risk of asthma in later life.

In men, the disease may cause inflammation of the epididymis in the scrotum with symptoms such as tenderness or severe pain and swelling in the infected half of the scrotum. In rare cases, a sensation of pressure in the genital area and a fever may occur. Chlamydia may also cause eye inflammation, not uncommonly on one side. It is possible that a man’s fertility may also be affected.

Remember!
Chlamydia often has very few symptoms, sometimes none at all. Using a condom is an effective way of protecting against infection.
