About the penis

This text concerns a number of details about the penis, but far from everything. If you have any personal questions about your penis, you can make an appointment at our clinic.

Erection
Erection is a word used to describe when the penis becomes stiff. What happens is that it becomes filled with blood.

You can get an erection from sexual fantasies, dreams or from your senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, or touch). You can also get an erection by having the penis caressed, by masturbating or being exposed to vibrations. Men often have erections 4-6 times during a night and this is a normal physical activity that happens automatically.

Bumps and spots
Bumps or spots on the penis can be hair follicles or sebaceous glands. These are found all over the body, but they are highly visible on the penis because there is no layer of fat under the skin there.
If you have bumps or spots on the edge of the head or just below it, these are usually completely harmless – well over half of all men have these.

Circumcision
Some men are circumcised. This means that a part of, or the whole, foreskin (that covers the tip of the penis) is removed. Circumcision can be done for religious or cultural reasons. You can also be circumcised if you have problems with a tight foreskin – when it hurts to have sexual intercourse or if it is hard to wash the penis. Circumcision of boys is allowed in Sweden and regulated by law.
